I drag myself up off the floor, my entire back blazing like a supernova after falling down out of the gamma ray turret. At least, the way I hit, the impact was spread out over my entire body.

“Sorry, forgot to secure my crash webbing,” I call toward the cockpit. “I’ll get back to shooting in a second.”

“Never mind,” Rahb shouts from the cockpit. “They damaged our engines and the gamma ray emitters are off line. Prepare to repel a boarding force.”

“Boarding force?” My jaw gapes. “Someone’s going to bother boarding this tiny flea speck of a ship?”

As in response to my incredulous query, I’m thrown off my feet—again—as the Beetle shudders under a massive impact which overwhelms the inertial dampeners. Rising back to my feet once more, muttering curses under my breath, a terrible wrenching sound gives me pause.

A thick metal cone, almost like a claw, punches through the roof of the passenger cabin and crumples the hull back enough that atmosphere is breached. Shields pop into place automatically to prevent catastrophic air loss, but it’s a blood curdling sight.

Worse is what comes next. A bright red dot appears at about knee height on the side of the curving cabin walls. I know exactly what it means, and am therefore not surprised when the dot moves to the left, tracing a molten line behind it.

The enemy is cutting through the hull. Then they’ll pour in here in masse, and probably take Jane.

Over my dead body.

Ar’Kell comes to stand by me, a pair of short power blades held reverse grip in his hands. He nods approval as I unsling my Khaffi stick.

“Good choice.”

“I’m not about to shoot a hole in this toy of a ship. It has enough already.”

“The enemy will likely not risk that either, considering they still believe they have to take Jane alive.”

We decided to put a ringer bracelet on Jane, to fool them, but the real one resides in the strong box of the Beetle. The enemy has no idea, we hope.

“Let’s hope you’re right,” I say as the line grows ever longer, then begins to curve into a circle. “Otherwise, they’re just going to have a firing squad on the other side as soon as that wall comes down.”

“I am right,” Ar’Kell says matter of factly.

“What makes you so damn sure, Pi’Rell?” I snap.

“Because if they wanted us all dead, they’d just let loose with their torpedoes and blow us out of the stars while our engines are down.”

He has a point. Right now our biggest advantage is that the enemy thinks they have to kid glove it until they have Jane safely on their ship. That and the fact that we’re motivated by protecting the woman we all probably love.

I know I love her, and they most likely do too. How the hell can they not? Jane’s awesome.

I have to put thoughts of our unusual little quartet aside for the moment as the red line has nearly folded back in on itself and made a full circle.
